Methodology
The Top500 research methodology has been designed in conjunction with the University of Cape Town’s Development Policy Research Unit. The top five companies from each of the 100 business sectors constitute the Top500 ranked/benchmarked companies in South Africa.
Standards
In order to do so, a measure of the qualities considered being characteristic of top companies must be designed in order to rank companies. To be classed as one of South Africa’s best, we expect companies to excel in three key spheres, namely financial performance, empowerment, and policy and accreditation. The challenge has been to profile leading businesses – in terms of global and South African best practice standards – that not only excel in their specific sectors, but which also have a strong set of social, empowerment and development policies in place.
