We’re doing it as a company that has operated in Africa for over 100 years and is backed by JSE-listed Barloworld Limited, a R62bn company with secondary listings on the London and Namibian Stock Exchanges.

We’re doing it by delivering quality construction and mining equipment to the earthmoving industry. Equipment that delivers the lowest total owning and operating cost over its lifetime. Equipment that’s engineered for success. Yours. And is backed by informed, empowered and passionate people. Ours.

We’re doing it as the sole dealer for Cat® earthmoving machines and related mining and construction equipment in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia, as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Katanga province in a joint venture with Bartrac.

We’re doing it by ensuring that our applications and training experts spend their time where it counts most: In the field, where we can help your employees with the expert knowledge they need to get the most out of your machines.

We’re doing it through our commitment to social, environmental and economic sustainability. By striving to minimise the environmental impact of our economic activities by investing in water and electricity metering systems at all our facilities, and measuring fuel, water and electricity intensity across our southern African operational footprint.

And we’re doing it by driving customer satisfaction. By ensuring that you always feel appreciated, understood and valued by our team. By holding to the highest standards in every aspect of our business to make sure that you’re secure in the knowledge that you’re dealing with the most reliable, accessible and safety-conscious company in South Africa. And by making your entire experience as effortless as possible.

Our History

The Barloworld Equipment story began in 1902, when Major Ernest ‘Billy’ Barlow formed Thos. Barlow & Sons in Durban, South Africa. Since then, we’ve grown to become part of a multinational brand distribution company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and are the sole dealer for Cat® machines in southern Africa.

Here’s a look at where our journey has taken us over the years:

1927: Charles Sydney ‘Punch’ Barlow (Major Barlow’s son) negotiates the appointment of Thos. Barlow & Sons as the Cat® distributor for the Natal and the then Transvaal regions.

1960: Work starts on our flagship facility in Isando.

1973: The company (now named Barlow Rand Ltd after the acquisition of Rand Mines) successfully expands into Botswana and Namibia. Our Tractor Division grows to 30 companies occupying 64 hectares of land, with over 2000 staff members.

1993: We continue to increase our footprint when the Cat® dealerships in Spain (Barloworld Finanzauto) and Portugal (Barloworld STET) are included in our operations.

1994: We are appointed as the Cat® dealer for Angola, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.

1998: Southwest Siberia is incorporated into our dealership territories – and this eventually expands into a dealership area of 9.8 million square kilometres, covering six time zones, and including Eastern Siberia, Yakutia and the Russian Far East.

2006: We enter into a joint venture with French Cat® dealer Tractafric to form Congo Equipment, which becomes the Cat® dealer for the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Katanga Province, a rich mining territory with enormous potential.

Our Values

Our employees are our greatest asset and the key to our success – and yours. That’s the reason we make sure that they always feel:

• Appreciated by treating them with respect, valuing the contribution they make to our customers, and using empathy, understanding and care to respond effectively to their needs.

• Secure when they work for us, by seeking to understand their unique needs and helping them thrive and grow both personally and professionally.

• That working for us is effortless by inspiring them to do their best and providing a rewarding culture which encourages them to strive for more.

As part of our world, we ask that they conduct themselves in accordance with our values. Values that drive our relationships with each other and with our customers, and that ultimately ensure our success.

Integrity
The power of honesty.

Honesty and transparency are the standard at Barloworld Equipment. We accept nothing less. And we don’t expect you to either.

Excellence
The power of intense focus.

We’ve made it our lifelong commitment to ensure that we deliver excellence in every aspect of our business. You’ll experience it in the passion of our staff, the way we work with you, our safety standards, and everything else we do.

Teamwork
The power of working together.

As a team, we’re committed to respecting and supporting our fellow team members, to working together to ensure your success, to communicating effectively with everyone we encounter, and above all, to upholding the highest safety standards.

Commitment
The power of responsibility.

We act in the best interests of our customers. Every single day. We make it our business to learn everything we can about our brands, because knowledge breeds passion and passion is what defines us. We’re committed to professionalism in everything we do and say, and to ensuring that safety is a top priority. Every minute of every day.

Sustainability
The power of endurance.

As the sole dealer for Cat® earthmoving equipment, it should come as no surprise that safety is our number one priority and that a culture of safety permeates every aspect and area of our business.

Empowerment & Transformation

Barloworld Limited announced its broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) transaction in 2008. The transaction included shareholdings for employees, community service groups, an education trust and strategic black partners. This translated into an effective 29% empowerment of Barloworld’s South African operations.

The allocation of shares to South African employees has the important spin-off of improved staff retention and loyalty, with corresponding benefits for customers.
